Earlier this year, students at Kealing Middle School received a lesson in bookselling from our Kid’s Book Buyer, Meghan G. As an added challenge, we asked them to select a book and write about what drew them to that one in particular, what kind of reader they think it would appeal to, and what the book’s marketing copy and cover express to them right off the bat as potential readers. What we got back is a truly thoughtful collection of essays from a group of passionate young readers. This is the second essay in a month-long series. Perhaps these great essays will give you some insight into the bookselling process and maybe even some summer reading ideas!

Why I Think it Will Succeed: Shades of Earth by Beth Revis
By Anna
The main reason why I would choose Shades of Earth as a book to sell is because it is the ending of a New York Times bestselling series, the Across the Universe trilogy. If many people liked those books, then they would most likely purchase Shades of Earth, especially if it is the ending to a series.
Likewise, if people enjoyed this book, then they may also become interested in the two preceding books.
Another reason why I would choose Shades of Earth is because I think that the overall concept of the book is interesting. It is about two teens who have traveled across the universe to start a new life on a new planet. As a reader, I would want to read this book because it is about people working together to build a community. I personally like reading about people struggling as a unit with a common goal. It brings up a lot of suspense, self-discovery, and discovery about the social and emotional side of humans.
I would also choose this book because it is written with two perspectives. When I read, I enjoy seeing and hearing about two different sides of the plot. I gain a lot more knowledge as a reader about the characters’ relationships and thoughts. I also gain a lot more knowledge about the plot than I would if I were to read from only one character’s point of view.
I am also interested in Shades of Earth because there is a romantic relationship between the two main characters. I enjoy romance in books, and I know that many other people enjoy the theme of love as well.

My daughter loved this series and I took her to meet Ms Revis and get her copies signed. Thanks for the post!
