Our friends at the brand new small press A Strange Object are kicking off their Tesseract event series this Thursday night on the roof deck of AMOA-Arthouse. It is going to be, to use the parlance of our times, awesome.
The first thing you need to know is that Claire Vaye Watkins will be there reading from her award-winning and highly acclaimed collection of stories, Battleborn. And when we say “award-winning and highly acclaimed”, we mean:
• Winner of The Story Prize
• Winner of The New York Public Library’s Young Lions Fiction Award
• Winner of Rosenthal Family Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters
• Listed by the San Francisco Chronicle as one of the Best Books of 2012
• NPR Best Short Story Collections of 2012
• Named one of the National Book Foundation’s “5 Under 35″ fiction writers of 2012
As Nolan told us long ago, “Battleborn‘s fangs bite deep in a way that a talented and patient writer can orchestrate. It’s a slow and deliberate burn of sensually gritty prose….Keep this author on your radar.”
So that’s the first thing. The second thing you need to know about this event is that Tamler Sommers, philosopher and author of the McSweeney’s-published A Very Bad Wizard: Morality Behind the Curtain, will present the interactive portion of the evening. When was the last time you went to an event where you were invited to interact with a philosopher? Seriously.
The third thing you should know is that local band Tele Novella will perform.

The fourth thing to know (there’s a lot to keep in mind, we’re aware, so very many reasons why this event will be like none other) is that there will be a signature cocktail. And a sunset. And we’ll be there slinging books and glowing because life is awesome (please come say hi).
One more thing to know! The Chronicle, in their write up of the event, said, “Prepare for a convergence of space, time, and art into a single hypercube of cultural experience.” If that doesn’t sound like a good time, sisters and brothers, we don’t know what does.
Oh wait, how could we almost forget this last thing? The name of the event series? Tesseract? It’s taken from Madeline L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time.
