S U M M E R R E A D I N G
Here at BookPeople, we believe that there is nothing better to do on a lazy summer day than to dig into a great book. And that’s why our new motto is Carpe Librum! We say: Seize the summer, and seize the book!
In this spirit, we’re happy to once again offer a free summer reading program for young readers going into grades K-8.
Just like last year, you’ll come down to BookPeople to pick up a bookmark for your grade level. (Bookmarks will be available soon – we’ll make a big announcement when they’re here!) You’ll read three books off of that list, plus three of your own. Book lists are up on our website now. At the end of the summer, bring in your bookmark listing all the great books you read and receive your prize! You can also join us for a Summer Reading Celebration on August 17.

MICHAEL FRY – The Odd Squad
Saturday, May 18 at 2p
Join us as we celebrate the delightful new series from the co-creator of the comic strip Over the Hedge, Austin’s own Michael Fry! Illustrated throughout with Michael’s original artwork, The Odd Squad promises to please young readers who enjoy the comic underdog stylings of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. What starts off as a reluctant band of hopeless oddballs in the school’s “lamest” club morphs into an empowered team ready to face whatever middle school throws at them.

We absolutely fell head-over-heels in love with Divya Srinivasan’s first picture book, Little Owl’s Night. We cannot wait to celebrate the release of Octopus Alone! Once again, with original artwork and a sweet story, Divya shows children a wonderful part of the natural world in a very warm-hearted way. We’re going to have a spectacular underwater adventure with Divya today! Wear your snorkels and water wings and join us while we munch on Goldfish crackers, sip some octo-punch and listen to Divya read us her new book. To get a sense of Divya’s incredible talents, take a look at the trailer she made which features her original artwork:

If You Want to See a Whale by Julie Fogliano and Erin Stead
In this quiet and beautiful picture book by Julie Fogliano and Erin E. Stead, the team that created the Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor book And Then It’s Spring, a boy learns exactly what it takes to catch a glimpse of an elusive whale.
The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli
With perfect comic pacing, Greg Pizzoli introduces us to one funny crocodile who has one big fear: swallowing a watermelon seed. What will he do when his greatest fear is realized? Will vines sprout out his ears? Will his skin turn pink? This crocodile has a wild imagination that kids will love.
The Mighty LaLouche by Matthew Olshan and Sophie Blackall
In Paris, France, there lived a humble postman named Lalouche. He was small, but his hands were nimble, his legs were fast, and his arms were strong. When his job was replaced by an electric car, he turned to boxing to support himself and his pet finch, Genevieve. But—”You? A boxer?” the fighters asked. “I could sneeze and knock you down!” Still, Lalouche refused to give up.
