Yesterday we hosted a reception for everyone in our neck of the woods who volunteered to be a Giver for World Book Night this year (happening so soon – April 23!) Folks had a little wine, a little cheese, listened to the (seriously talented) jazz stylings of a group of young musicians (if they had a name, or an album, we’d point you immediately in their direction, but as it stands, we can only call them These Guys and thank them very, very much for a lively afternoon) and of course took care of the most important business – picking up their boxes of books.
I love the Giver Reception. World Book Night is such a massive effort and so much of the preparation happens via email – the Giver applications, WBN communications, and then the updates we send out to our set of Givers. The opportunity to actually meet the faces of those intrepid souls who will go forth on April 23rd armed with Bosspyants, The Handmaid’s Tale, Salvage the Bones, and so many other wonderful titles reaffirms why we love to participate in WBN. Their enthusiasm, their creativity, their hardcore love of reading – it warms my heart. As does being able to stand in front of a room full of people and explain that WBN is an industry-wide effort between publishers, authors, book distributors, bookstores and readers. Book lovers of all stripes, working together. It’s a beautiful thing!
If you’re a Giver and selected BookPeople as your pick up location, you can come down to pick up your box of books any time between now and April 22nd, between the hours of 9am and 11pm. And if you weren’t able to participate in World Book Night this year, we hope you’ll be inspired to join the effort next year. For more information on what World Book Night is all about, check out their website.
Can I like this post multiple times! I can’t wait to pick up my books tomorrow night!! 🙂
