What We’re Reading

SALWOOL

SALVADOR

Wool by Hugh Howey
“I really like it so far. It’s another apocalyptic book but it’s pretty original. It’s about a community that lives underground in a silo. They have been there for generations. They have some windows to the outside world that they really cherish. From time to time people want to go outside, even though there is a toxic corrosive gas that will kill them in minutes. From time to time people decide to go out, knowing full well they will die. Asking to go outside is breaking the rules of the community. Those that do choose to leave have to clean the silo’s windows before wandering off to their death. So far a great read.”

JOE

The Croning by Laird Baron
“I am currently reading Laird Baron’s phenomenal book The Croning for our horror book club The Nightmare Factory. Like Thomas Ligolti before him, Barron is a true heir to H.P Lovecraft. Tapping into a a world of secrets and ancient eldritch evils which should stay hidden in the dark, The Croning is everything a delver in to the depths of despair should read. For fans of Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and Karl Edward Wagner. His third collection of short stories The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All we be released on April 2. Baron is one of the best horror writers working today.”

Join Joe and Steven Tues, April 16 at 8PM when they discuss The Croning.

MATTHEW

Tenth of December by George Saunders“I find his writing incredibly funny. He writes his characters in such a way that you feel as though you’re crawling around inside of their heads. Saunders’ event at BookPeople was hilarious, it made me want to read everything he’s ever written. Tenth of December is a fast paced, hilarious collection of well written off the wall short stories. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an overall entertaining read.”

KATHLEEN

Rapture Practice by Aaron Hartzler
“Rapture Practice is the memoir of a young man raised in a fundamentalist home. His parents are incredibly strict, he isn’t allowed to watch movies and can only listen to Christian music. In high school he begins to rebel, and his parents decide to move him to a more strict school. The book chronicles his struggle with what he wants and what his parents want for him. The whole thing is told with a bit of humor. So far it’s a great read- well written, funny, and very real. You feel for the kid.”

Rapture Practice will be released April 9, 2013. It is now available for pre-order.
