Review: EYE OF THE ALBATROSS

Eye of the Albatross: Visions of Hope and Survival by Carl Safina

Carl Safina writes exquisite prose. As a biologist, I want everyone to read his books! Eye of the Albatross is no exception.  Safina weaves an elegant tale combining literature, adventure, and science to chronicle the difficult life of a mother albatross (Amelia) in her struggle for survival. The ability of these birds to survive in the vast ocean reaches is astounding. Flying over 2,000 miles in one week? Check. Grabbing some much needed sleep mid-flight? Check. However, while weaving his beautiful story, Safina makes it apparent that despite amazing abilities to survive in a harsh, unforgiving environment, these birds are increasingly faced with new dangers in the form of multiple human impacts on their ocean home.

Reading this book you will become invested in this story, rooting for the survival of Amelia and her newborn chick. You will also be inspired to do your part to minimize negative impacts on the world we live in. To quote Safina, “In the oceans, less is more: less trash, less destruction of habitat, less contamination, less atmospheric disturbance, less overfishing.” I hope Safina’s message touches others as much as it touched me.
