The River Swimmer by Jim Harrison
“I love Jim Harrison. The River Swimmer is two novellas. I am currently on the first, which is about a middle aged man who has to move in with his mother to take care of her. He is grappling with going back to his small town home, and what his life has amounted to. So far it’s great, and I can’t wait to read the rest.”
CAROLYN
Northline by Willy Vlautin
“I really try not to choose favorites, but Vlautin’s Lean on Pete is probably my favorite book. I was so excited to start Northline, it is his only book I hadn’t read. Alison has a terrible life. She drinks too much, has a boyfriend who drinks too much, and has been in and out of staying at her mom’s house. Her only solace is talking to Paul Newman- not the actor but the characters he plays. Vlautin’s characters are sad and somewhat disheartening, but they are so realistic. They feel as though you really know them. Vlautin actually created a soundtrack for Northline which I was afraid to listen to but it’s beautiful!”
ALEX
Children of Men by P.D. James
“This is a different kind of apocalypse story. No one is fertile and the youngest generation is now in their mid 20s. Resources are dwindling and the elderly are seen as a drain. London is the only place that is “thriving” in this bleak world and newcomers aren’t being greeted warmly. The book differs greatly from the movie – it’s so much more British. I loved it.”
DOC
The Stench of Honolulu by Jack Handey
“I am just starting The Stench of Honolulu, but so far it is hilarious. I’ve already considered throwing a grenade in heaven, and how awesome that would be. As soon as I heard SNL funny man Jack Handey had written a novel I knew I had to read it ASAP, and I was right. He is great at switching gears mid sentence and taking you to this wacky and uproarious place.”
