The Miniature Wife and Other Short Stories by Manuel Gonzales
“I’ve really enjoyed The Miniature Wife thus far. It reminds me a lot of Judy Budnitz’s Nice Big American Baby. Gonzales’s stories are really imaginative and weird. I’m not done with the collection yet, but I loved the part in Pilot, Copilot, Writer where the writer remembers looking down and seeing life going on without him. He sees his wife get remarried in the church, he’s unable to warn children playing in the street of cars he sees around corners. These stories are really intriguing and peculiar.”

Alif t
he Unseen by G. Willow Wilson
“It reminded me a lot of The Hakawati. Alif the Unseen is set in the middle east. It has elements of fantasy with genies and magic, but is also very much in the modern age. Alif is a computer hacker trying to take over the government, he is aided by the secret book of the jinn. It’s a really fast paced read, and a whole lot of fun. It has adventure, technology, and even dips into current affairs- what’s not to love?”

Alexander McQueen: The Life and The Legacy by Judith Watt
“Alexander McQueen is on of the most influential persons in fashion in the last 20 years. Since his death 3 years ago I have been curious to know more about McQueen’s Life. This book tells that story from his teenage years through age 40, when he decided to take his own life. McQueen came from relatively humble beginnings, there was no indication of the kind of creative genius he would become. This biography is well written and definitely enjoyable.”

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson
“I Am Legend was our selection for January’s It’s is the End of the World As We Know It Book Club. I had read it before, almost 10 years ago. This time around I really enjoyed the it’s intensity. I paid a lot attention to the main character’s depression and drinking. I’d forgotten how well written it really is. The book definitely blows the movie out of the water (which should have been called Will Smith drives around NY with a dog (there is a dog in the book but he certainly doesn’t get co-pilot status)).”

A Conspiracy of Faith by Jussi Adler-Olsen
“It’s a cold case, filled with quirky characters. A message in a bottle shows up decades later, the cry for help is written in blood. The murderer of 20+ people is still on the loose and perhaps still at large. All the while a wife begins to distrust her husband. She decides to investigate his suspicious behavior on her own. A Conspiracy of Faith is really compelling. I’ve read the whole series, they’re all well great.”
