Stand Up Sit Down and This Time Do It Right

~post by Steven
“So the hosts of the Stand Up Sit Down Book Club walk into a bar, and the bartender says ‘What’s the matter, fellas? Your mid-afternoon cocktails wear off? Need to get your post-afternoon-pre-early-evening buzz going before you can start seriously considering your post-mid-evening-pre-night binge?’ Get it? Get it? They’re drunks! Filthy drunks!”

Be that as it may, the Stand Up Sit Down Book Club, the foremost comedy memoir book club in the central Austin area, has a great discussion lined up for you folks this month. On Monday January 28th at 7:00 p.m., we’ll be chatting about Michael Ian Black’s excellent You’re Not Doing It Right: Tales of Marriage, Sex, Death, and Other Humiliations in BookPeople’s “chuckle hut” of a cafe.

Far from the lighthearted, uplifting fare that characterizes so many collections of comedic essays, Michael Ian Black’s memoir is a gut-punch of neurosis from the jump. From early childhood to semi-fame, the star of The State, Stella, Michael & Michael Have Issues, and so many Sierra Mist and Pets.com commercials reflects on life’s moments of abjection, wherein one must question one’s very sense of self and ask “How did I get here?”. Far from eschewing his distinctive narcissism, Michael Ian Black embraces his egomania with purpose and insight in his new study in self-deprecation. Recounted with the same wit and cynicism that rocketed My Custom Van: And 50 Other Mind-Blowing Essays That Will Blow Your Mind All Over Your Face onto the New York Times Bestseller list, You’re Not Doing It Right is made even better by its intimacy and relatability. Hilarious and spellbinding, this collection is a hallmark of comedic storytelling, and the ensuing discussion is not to be missed. Michael Ian Black entertained the bejeezus out of us when he visited BookPeople last March, and we owe it to the ghosts of all those giggles to keep their spirits alive this Monday January 28th at 7:00 p.m.

Stand Up Sit Down meets in the BookPeople cafe at 7:00 p.m. on the fourth Monday of every month to crack wise and exchange ribald stories, all under the auspices of being a legitimate book club. Join us for a hoot, a holler, and a hot dog (B.Y.O.H.D.) this month to talk up Michael Ian Black. In this club, there isn’t a two drink minimum, but do remember to tip your barista.

The idea for this sketch came to Flippo in a dream, and Michael Ian Black was bizarrely cool with it:
