From the Statesman: “Fun is an aspect of fiction that often gets undersold,” says Saunders, talking about craft over the telephone, from his car, in a parking lot in Albany, N.Y. On his end, the connection flutters in and out throughout the interview. “Fun is hard to talk about. It doesn’t ‘teach’ well. … All those literary things we learn about? Theme and character and all that? My experience is you can’t get there without fun.”
The Austin-American Statesman talks to George Saunders about his writing process and his new collection of short stories, Tenth of December, which is the Statesman Selects pick for January (and oh yes, it is definitely fun.) Saunders reads here at BookPeople tomorrow night (1/22) at 7p. Which we expect will also be fun. And literary. And a pretty awesome freaking night. So you should come.
