Here’s what the crew over at MysteryPeople was up to last week….
Craig Johnson took us to the Scene of the Crime, answering questions about how living and writing in Northern Wyoming has influenced his bestselling series (now and A&E show) featuring Sheriff Walt Longmire.
“There are limitations to living in a place like northern Wyoming, but to me the advantages far outweigh them. There aren’t too many restaurants, or too much live theatre or music, but as Gretel Erlich has said, there’s a solace in open spaces, a focus that enables my writing that I wouldn’t trade for anything.”
Scott reviewed Lori Armstrong’s new thriller, Merciless:
“In a way, Armstrong has turned the traditional thriller heroine on her head. Both she and the reader are pretty confident she can face any physical threat. It’s being comfortable with her “feminine” side where the struggle comes in. It’s her relationship with Mason, a lover who worships both these sides of her and isn’t intimidated, especially by the fact that she can out-shoot him, that adds a fresh dimension to the thriller as well as making it completely human in its tone. As far as I know this is the only book where the most romantic moment occurs over deer hunting.”
Chris declared a “new era of Ellis” in his review of Gun Machine:
“Gun Machine is one hell of an entertaining book. Ellis’ prose sets the pace and the story barely stops to take a breathe throughout its 300 pages. What really makes this story such a great success is the level of detail Ellis gives to both his characters and his setting. The dialogue is snappy and believable and the descriptions of New York make you think Ellis has lived there all his life (which he has not, he lives England). The details pull you in; you can clearly see what the characters see which makes the story effectively chilling. ”
There’s always something going on at MysteryPeople. Head over to the MP blog to check it all out. This week, we’re looking forward to a review of the new Ian Rankin thriller, an in-depth piece on Stuart McBride, and more.
