What We’re Reading

MEG

The Subtle Knife: His Dark Materials  by Philip Pullman
“These books are SO awesome. I’m about to start the third one in the series. They are similar to Narnia, which I have always loved but without all the Christian undertones. It’s really fun to sink into the world Philip Pullman has created. It’s easy to get lost in. I read this one in about a day. These books are best read with a pet companion.”

SHAPPY

Marbles by Ellen Forney
“Ellen Foreny had been seeing a psychiatrist for a long time. Just before turning 30 she was diagnosed with Bi-Polar disorder and prescribed Lithium. Forney refuses to take her meds, and instead continues to smoke pot. She fears curing her crazy will kill her creativity. Instead she goes on a researching rampage to find the link between bi polar disorder and depression with creativity and the artistic urge. A must read for all cartoonists who think they’re insane.”

SALVADOR

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield
“This book helps you identify creative blocks and how to get past them.  It begins with the idea of resistance and what that looks like- for example I can’t go to the gym today because I’m “_____”. You are making excuses, why? Steven Presserfield’s writing is really clear and accessible. I was interested in this book because it’s been out for nearly ten years and still is an excellent seller. I also am experiencing a creative block myself, I think this should help.”

MARIE

The Peculiar by Stefan Bachmann
“I am just about 100 pages in. It’s a lot darker that I thought it would be. Steam punk London has just been invaded by faerie creatures. There are two major story lines you can tell are going to converge. He’s a really good writer. I enjoy all of the fanciful character names he chooses like Mr. Licorice. He paints a scene well and makes it tangible, his London is a pretty gritty place.”

JOE

Annotated Sandman Vol. 2 by Neil Gaiman edited by Leslie Klinger
“I am currently reading Annotated Sandman Vol. 2, it was released yesterday. Sandman itself needs no introduction, as it is one of the most acclaimed graphic novels of all time. Vol. 2 combines the storylines of Season of Mists and The Game of You two of the better loved storylines in the series. As with Vol. 1 it includes annotation by Leslie Klinger, the award-winning writer of notes for Dracula and the utterly-awesome annotated Sherlock Holmes. Everyone should know this book is AWESOME and I can’t wait for volume 3.  I highly recommend it, 5 out of 5 breakfast tacos!”

RAUL

Ratlines by Stuart Neville
“This book takes place in Ireland in the 1960’s just before president Kennedy’s visit. Albert Ryan is a Lieutenant who is investigating the recent murders of Germans’ who had been given asylum in Ireland. So far this book is really engaging. Albert seems like he’s been through enough that he doesn’t hesitate to do what needs to be done when things get rough.  There is one scene where he goes to his hometown in Ireland to visit his father who is a shop owner. His father is having some trouble with his distributors so Albert goes and pays them a visit. It’s fantastic.”
