Nightmare Factory Attacked by Zombies of Sweden

~post by Steven

Good evening, boils and gruels. Our candelabras are flickering once again as we lead the teeming horde of nightmarish skeleton-men directly to your hiding place, having ourselves succumbed to their fiendish mind control, betraying your misplaced trust and fulfilling the ancient prophesy – just as the old crone warned. Such a convergence of destinies can only mean one thing…that it is time for another meeting of THE NIGHTMARE FACTORY BOOK CLUB!!! This unspeakable cabal of misanthropic lycanthropes is congregating on Tuesday August 21st at 7:00 p.m. in the cold and taciturn abattoir that is the BookPeople cafe to discuss John Ajvide Lindqvist’s unsettling zombie grimoire, Handling The Undead.

On the heels of his disturbing tome of vampiric camaraderie, Let the Right One In (reprinted in the United States as Let Me In), Lindqvist imagines a Swedish hellscape in Handling The Undead where the recently deceased have reconstituted themselves and returned to the physical world to instill dread and panic in the living, spewing chaos into the midst of Scandinavian society. It begins with a buzzing, then a foreboding headache, then a pervasive sense of wrongness and an eery semi-psychic skill, culminating in the defiance of the world’s natural order and the shrieking insanity that inevitably follows. This master of horror eschews the conventions of the zombie apocalypse archetype, documenting the human misery that would realistically follow from a sudden reappearance of the shambling bodies of festering former friends and family. This conference of the damned is not to be missed.

The Nightmare Factory meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at BookPeople, providing a convivial and accepting atmosphere to chat about books, obscure movies, comics…uh…paintings, food, hallucinations, or just whatever. It’s a great and gruesome gestalt of geeks and greenhorns alike. All discussion will obviously be accomplished telepathically.
