A long time favorite of mine, and Harrison’s number two pick from our summer selections, is Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. While we both read each of the books from this list, Treasure Island was the only book that we read aloud together, and it certainly enhanced the experience and doubled the fun (what could be more fun that trying out pirate voices?). Harrison has decided that his “favorite books are the ones with big adventures” and Treasure Island certainly qualifies. Stevenson has a gift for making his characters come alive, with mine and Harrison’s pick for most interesting being Long John Silver. Both of us agreed, however, that the narrator, Jim Hawkins, would make a much better shipmate. Harrison thought it worth mentioning that there were some creepy parts that might be scary for some kids (“not for me, but some kids”), especially the voice among the trees. Stevenson certainly doesn’t shy away from violence, but it’s of a PG-rated sort that kids of this reading level can certainly handle. All in all, a grand adventure and classic tale well worth reading (or re-reading, as the case may be).
