Kester & Harrison’s Summer Reading: SISTERS GRIMM and THE GREAT BRAIN

~Post by Kester & Harrison

The Sisters Grimm by Michael Buckley

Just a chapter or two into Michael Buckley’s The Sisters Grimm, Harrison dramatically declared, “this book is going to be my favorite of the whole summer!!” It is certainly a lot of fun. Buckley reimagines fairy tale characters living in something like our own world. These Everafters take on jobs that we might not have imagined; Prince Charming as mayor, Snow White as a school teacher and, mine and Harrison’s favorite, the Three Little Pigs as police officers. The sisters Grimm are Sabrina and Daphne and the story is about their discovery and their work to save their grandparents. Harrison says it’s an “amazing book for any kid who likes fairy tale adventures and magic and fun.” I could not agree more.

The Great Brain by John D. Fitzgerald

John D. Fitzgerald’s The Great Brain was one of my favorite books as a young boy, and I was excited to see how Harrison would take to it. While he said that he liked that it felt “sort of real life,” he also found it a little dry. His favorite character was the narrator, John, younger brother to the Great Brain. He did say (and I concur) that he appreciated that “even though the Great Brain pulls some swindles, he is a nice and helpful kid.” While maybe not on par with other selections from this summer (Sisters Grimm remains his favorite), Harrison did enjoy The Great Brain, “especially for a break from more fantasy type stuff.”

  1. I loved the Great Brain also. I have been thinking about this series while reading back through all the Encyclopedia Brown books. The Great Brain books may be next :-).
