The second book that Harrison and I read for our shared summer reading was Shakespeare’s Secret by Elise Broach. Harrison quickly praised this as a “much better book than Dragonbreath” and I would hasten to agree. Both of us loved that there were multiple mysteries and the ways in which they were interwoven. Being that three of Harrison’s aunts (my sisters) are actors, we especially enjoyed the mystery surrounding whether Shakespeare was the true author of the plays credited to him.
Harrison’s favorite character (and mine) was Hero, the young girl bent on solving the myriad mysteries; proof that young boys can read and enjoy a young female hero (provided, in Harrison’s case, that the young girl isn’t hung up on young boys). Hero is a great hero, and I was pleased to see that when Harrison saw a copy of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing on our bookshelf, he said, “hey, that’s the one with Hero in it.” Harrison recommends this book to any kid who likes a bit of history with their mystery and I would wholeheartedly include adults as well.
