Last Minute Father’s Day Gift Ideas

Father’s Day is Sunday. Figured out what you’re getting Dad yet? Here are a few suggestions curated by Chris Hoyt (and written up by Julie).

For the Sci-Fi Dads:

Darth Vader and Son
by Jeffrey Brown

The phone’s been ringing off the hook for this book! We have it in stock, get it while it’s hot – a graphic novel that asks, What if Darth Vader actually raised Luke Skywalker?

Red Shirts: A Novel in Three Codas
by John Scalzi

If your Dad’s a Trekkie, then he probably already knows that in the original Star Trek series, the guys on the Away Teams wearing the red shirts never made it back to the Enterprise. What if those guys in the red shirts started to notice? That’s what Scalzi’s novel, our Top Shelf pick for June, is all about. Sure to warm the funny bones of any nerdy Dad who has ever dreamed of beaming up.

For the Music-Loving Dad:

Satan is Real: The Ballad of the Louvin Brothers
by Charlie Louvin & Ben Whitmer

This Book Could Be Your Life Book Club went wild over this book a few months back. Satan is Real tells the tale of the Louvin Brothers, of whom Emmylou Harris said, “there was something scary and washed in the blood about the sound of the Louvin Brothers.” Yowza! For the Dad who digs not only country music.

Chinaberry Sidewalks
by Rodney Crowell

Crowell’s visit to BookPeople back when this book first came out in hardcover brought the house down. The  book covers singer/songwriter Crowell’s relationship with his parents as he grew up in Houston in the 1950s, where his papa took him to see shows with Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Hank Williams. This book is a tribute to both his mother and his father.

For the Dad Who Wants to be More of a Man

Manmade
by Joel Stein

When Time columnist Joel Stein found out he was having a son, he kind of freaked out. Afraid he lacked sufficient manliness to properly raise a male, he set out to buck himself up and learn a few things by hanging out with firefighters, a UFC hall of famer, a Marine Corp in basic training….  Kester and Chris both give this one the thumbs up. And there’s a bonus – if Dad likes the book, you can bring him here on June 29 to meet Joel Stein in person. Quality time!
