Are you a young-ish person? Do you read Young Adult books?
Then here are Five Things You Should Know About This Week
1. Insurgent, the new book by Veronica Roth, hit shelves.
Divergent was a HUGE DEAL. Huge. Insurgent promises to be, “another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.” Are you reading it? What do you think?
2. Also on the shelves this week: Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore
Finally, finally, finally, the follow up to Graceling and Fire is here!!! Check out the Bernini statue of Apollo and Daphne that inspired author Kristin Cashore over on her blog, where she also writes, “In Bitterblue, the character of Bellamew, a sculptor, is my Bernini. It’s up to you what her sculptures mean — whether they’re about being trapped, or about finding one’s strength and resisting/enduring… or about something else entirely.”
3. Media’s buzzing about Sarah Dewitz and her “Just 1 Book” program
We’re still glowing from World Book Night over here and the thousands of free books given out all over Austin (not to mention the nation), so this story really impressed us. Sarah Dewitz, a young person living in Orlando, Florida, looked around her community and saw there were people who needed things, things like books. So this incredible girl set out to organize a massive collection in her community and has now donated over 75,000 books through her Just 1 Book program. Now Sarah’s hitting the road in a book mobile. Watch the video on her website and just try not to feel inspired.
4. You can read an excerpt of the second book in Colin Meloy’s Wildwood series, Under Wildwood.
Time magazine has the first three chapters of Under Wildwood available to read online, check it out. Meeting Colin and his wife, illustrator Carson Ellis, when they stopped at BookPeople on tour for the first Wildwood book was a great experience. They’re both totally down to earth, incredibly talented people. Can’t wait to start reading their next book!
5. City of Lost Souls goes on sale May 8!
Mark your calendars (if they aren’t already) and get down here on May 8 to get your hands on a copy of City of Lost Souls, the fifth book in the bestselling Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. If you’re a fan, join the countdown over on the superb YA blog Mundie Moms (you can also watch the book trailer there).
And while we’re talking trailers, here’s the trailer for Paolo Bacigulpi’s The Drowned Cities, his follow up to Ship Breaker.
That was six things! You lucky reader, you. For more good, bookish, young adult things, check out BookPeople’s Teen Reviews blog, where young people write about the books they read.
