On March 16 at 7PM, three great authors will be visiting us to talk about their new teen books as part of the This is Teen! Live event. Moderated by David Levithan, the authors are Maggie Stiefvater, Siobhan Vivian, and Elizabeth Eulberg.
Last week, I profiled Maggie Stiefvater’s The Scorpio Races. Today I wanted to tell you about Siobhan Vivian’s The List.
The List
Siobhan Vivian
The premise of this book is pretty horrifying — every year for the past few decades, a list is anonymously published at Mount Washington High naming the prettiest and the ugliest girl in each grade. For the girls on the list – whether you are named ugliest or prettiest – the consequences can be profound. The book follows all eight girls on the list as they survive the week after the list is published.
I, like many of the characters in the fictional high school, naturally assumed that being named prettiest would make a person’s life easier, while being named ugliest would complicate life (and the girl’s self esteem). Of course, the book is nowhere near that simplistic. It’s fascinating to read how the girl’s lives intertwine, and the way the story progresses across all of the characters. An interesting read, I expect that what Siobhan has to say at the event will be equally fascinating.
