While perusing the New Arrivals shelves down in teen today, I came across four books that I want to read but somehow haven’t yet. All of them just came out this month, and they can be loosely divided into 2 categories: Mystery & Fantasy. They are:
Ripper
By Stefan Petrucha
Set in turn of the (20th) century New York City, Carver Young’s dreams come true when he’s adopted by a Pinkerton detective and begins a sort of apprenticeship with him. However, soon after beginning, a series of shocking murders begins haunting the city, and Carver is somehow drawn into solving them — at least that is what I’ve gleaned from the cover. I’m a sucker for murder mysteries, and I love the idea that the reason the Ripper murders ended in London might be because the Ripper moved.
Guy Langman, Crime Scene Procrastinator
By Josh Berk
This is another mystery I’m looking forward to reading the first chance I get.
Guy isn’t all that in to joining the school’s forensic club with his friend (especially since he kind of doubts his friend’s logic that it will help them get girls), but he goes along with it. So, the last thing the guys actually expect to find is a dead body, a real live (so to speak) dead body at the fake crime scene that was arranged for the club to investigate. Now confronted with a real (instead of pretend) murder, the guys have to solve the crime.
Spell Bound
By Rachel Hawkins
The third in the Hex Hall Series, Sophie has been stripped of her powers and must return to Hex Hall if she ever wants to get them back. Add in the fact that the world just might end (literally) if she doesn’t, two guys vying for her attention, and a ghost and a vampire as her sworn allies, means that Sophie just might have a little more than she can handle.
I don’t normally read whole series anymore — the year between publication of the books means that I often can’t remember who the characters were, but this is a series I’m still into and want to know what happens next.
I love mysteries so much that when I wrote my memoir I put in a threaded mystery in the style of my favorite mystery writers. I love Agatha Christie, Earle Stanley Gardner, Ruth Rendel, Jonathon and faye Kellerman, and Frances Fyfield. They helped me when I needed to be soothed, and I couldn’t leave the house. I love people who love books. aloha
