This Sunday, February 19 at 4p Rachel Simon will be here with her New York Times and Indiebound bestseller, The Story of Beautiful Girl. Now in paperback, this novel begins on a night in 1968 when an African American deaf man and a developmentally disabled woman escape from the institution where they’ve been locked away. The ensuing story spans forty years, offering readers a love story while also highlighting the experience of those with disabilities. Here’s an excerpt from an interview with Rachel Simon where she describes her inspiration for the story:

On Thursday, February 23 at 7p debut novelist Sere Prince Halverson will discuss The Underside of Joy. Already chosen as a BlogHer Book Club pick and published in thirteen languages, Halverson’s first novel delves into the murky territory of step-parenthood. When the father of two children passes away unexpectedly, their biological mother resurfaces after a long absence to challenge the stepmother for custody.

Mandy, our Marketing Director, fell in love with this novel. “I enjoyed it because you connect with everything Halverson was describing. It’s a very sensual novel – colors, scents, emotions, you feel it all. She made the characters very personable and readable. It felt very familiar, even though the circumstances of the novel are clearly fiction. It’s like reading a letter from your friend.”

Finally, on Wednesday, February 29 at 7p we are very excited to welcome betselling author Lisa See. Many book clubs read her breakout bestseller, Snowflower and the Secret Fan. Since then, See has gone on to pen the bestsellers Peony in Love, Shanghai Girls, and her latest, Dreams of Joy, which is now out in paperback.

I’ve had the pleasure of attending many events with Lisa See, and can tell you that every time I hear her speak, I learn so much about modern Chinese history, and the experience of Chinese immigrants in America. The stories See’s in-depth research uncover are fascinating, and I look forward to hearing what she’s learned in the process of writing Dreams of Joy.

Here’s the first part of a terrific interview with Lisa See:

And of course if your book group has already read one of these books, please come and share your reading experience with us. There will be time during each event to ask questions of the author. We’re looking forward to these conversations and hope you can join us.
