If you’ve been following along here on the blog, then you’ve read some of the bookseller break-up stories we’ve shared in the spirit of Daniel Handler and Maira Kalman’s new Why We Broke Up Project. Inspired by their new novel (written by Handler, illustrated by Kalman) Why We Broke Up, the project offers a space online where you and me and everyone under the umbrella of the grand and ever growing world wide web can anonymously share our stories of heartbreak.
Now, for the heartbroken, heartsick, and even the heart breakers right here in Austin, we’ve erected our own Break-Up Wall inside of BookPeople, a place where you can share your stories of love lost.
Take a slip of paper, uncap a pen, scrawl your story and tack it to the board. Sweet catharsis!
Handler and Kalman will be here at BookPeople on Saturday, January 28, 7:30p to speak about and sign copies of Why We Broke Up. Those are Kalman’s illustrations you see posted around the bulletin board. She’s the same artist who illustrated the new edition of Michael Pollan’s Food Rules, as well as The Principles of Uncertainty, Looking at Lincoln (new this month), and other books. Daniel Handler, of course, is rather well known as one Mr. Lemony Snicket, author of the ever popular Series of Unfortunate Events.
You’ll find the Break Up Wall in our cafe, right alongside the wonderful art work of our own bookseller Danny G., whose bookmarks we highly recommend.
Here’s one more bookseller break-up story to inspire your own love-torn heart to let it all out:
I had a firm suspicion my girlfriend was cheating on me, so I needed to end it. Two days after we broke up, she was engaged to her roommate!
