Why We Broke Up

Inspired by the new book by Daniel Handler and Maira Kalman, we present bookseller break up stories…..

You broke up with me, but since I hadn’t realized we were going out, I wasn’t particularly crushed.

For some reason, you only discovered that you were actually in love with me after I broke up with you.

You didn’t read much. That should have been my first warning. You watched nothing but skateboard videos. Warning number two. You copied my Philosophy homework and got a better grade. I should’ve broken up with you out of principal then. But no. I waited. And waited. Until you showed up for work at the dining hall one night without our ring. FYI, that sparrow tattoo on your wrist? It’s ugly.

I fell in love when you hefted that whiskey bottle from the coffee table and took a swig like a pro. I fell out of love when you wouldn’t put it down.

I wanted so badly for you to like me, but then it turned out I didn’t like you.

I gave you Infinite Jest; White Noise; The Corrections. You came back with The Recognitions, Barth, and the never-ending Russians. After we broke up, you gave me a used copy of A Blind Man Can See How Much I Love You. I spilled coffee all over it. I still can’t read Proust because of you. But I will. I will.
