What’s Happening in BookKids?

The holidays are coming up, so I went around and asked some of the folks (non-kid bookselling folk) what some of their favorite kid books are this year.  Here’s the response we got.

Robyn (Assistant Buyer):

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making
By Catherynne M. Valente

Once upon a time, a girl named September crawled out of her window and flew to Fairyland on the back of a panther.  She knew she had to be fearless, although that’s easier said than done. But with the help of a wyverary (half wyvern/half library, of course!), and a few other friends picked up along the way, she soon found herself on a voyage to save Fairyland from the schemes of an evil Marquess. To withstand the perilous wonders (wonderful perils?) of Fairyland, however, a traveler must be clever as well as brave. so for the undaunted readers who might have the urge to follow September into the wilds, I shall pass on a quick word of warning: never eat the food, and keep an eye on your shoes. For, as we all know, real fairytales are full of trickery and contain just as much darkness as light (though light there certainly is)!

Wiener Wolf
By Jeff Crosby

When Wiener Dog tires of his cushy life at Granny’s, he take off for the open forest.  Sowing his oats, he sheds his house sweater and becomes … Wiener Wolf! With his new friends, Wiener Wolf howls at the moon, drinks water from the source, and beds down in a wolf pile. But when his new pack turns out to be a little too wild, he high-tails it home to Granny (and a new sweater), where they both learn a valuable lesson. Filled with frame-worthy illustrations by Austin’s own author/illustrator Jeff Crosby, Wiener Wolf isa book you’ll want to add to the library of every kid you know and love.
