At our October 19th MysteryPeople event, Jeff Lindsay didn’t just sign and discuss his latest book, Double Dexter, he performed. “Coming from theater and music, I miss it and try to pull those skills out when I can.”
He brought those skills out in one of the best readings I’ve heard. He’s one of the few authors who does his own audio books. Lindsay selected a very short and funny passage from Double Dexter that describes Dexter and his kids on a camping trip. Our favorite killer observes their guide giving a detailed and animated lecture on all the dangerous animals and poisonous plants, wrapping it up with “nature is our friend.”
Dexter’s response, “I always thought Miami was dangerous.”
Even his explanation on how he came up with Dexter was funny. It began with a dinner where he had to give a speech (before the writing gig, Lindsay did a lot of public speaking.) He looked over the crowd that was obnoxious and loud, talking with food in their mouths, and thought, “Serial murder isn’t such a bad thing.”

That said, he admitted to being the opposite of his creation. “Dexter has no emotions and I have too many.” He told us he talks to his police friends about crime scenes, because if he were actually at one he’d throw up. “If Woody Allen were a redneck, he’d be me.”
He did say they both share the trait of the need to speak Spanish in front of Latinos. He even taught some of our staff how to curse in Cuban.
For those of you who couldn’t meet Jeff in person, we’re well stocked with signed copies of Double Dexter and other books in the series.

And while I have you hear, allow me to invite you to join us for some of our upcoming MysteryPeople events like our October 22nd signing and discussion with Daniel Woodrell, Frank Bill and Craig Johnson, and our MysteryPeople first anniversary party with Jeri Westerson, the creator of medieval noir, where there will be weapons and cake. Because MysteryPeople knows how to have a good time.
