Read a Banned Book: ‘Of Mice and Men’

It’s Banned Books Week, the week when we celebrate our freedom to read by remembering those books which have been banned, censored and challenged over the years.

Folks from around the world have been uploading videos of themselves reading excerpts from banned books to this Youtube channel, where a worldwide Virtual Read Out is in full swing. You can send your videos to us (alison@bookpeople.com) if you’d like to participate – or you can get out there and read a banned book!  Here’s a recommendation:

Challenged Book:

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

~Banned in Ireland (1953); Syracuse, Indiana (1974); Oil City, Pennsylvania (1977); Grand Blanc, Michigan (1979); Continental, Ohio (1980) and other communities.

~Challenged in 1982 by Tell City, Indiana due to “profanity and using God’s name in vain.”
