Read a Banned Book: ‘Where the Sidewalk Ends’

It’s Banned Books Week, the week when we celebrate our freedom to read by remembering those books which have been banned, censored and challenged over the years. We’re highlighting a banned book a day here on the blog. If you’d like to participate in BBW, send us a video of yourself reading an excerpt from a banned book and we’ll post it on this Youtube channel, where a worldwide Virtual Read Out is in full swing. (Send your videos to alison@bookpeople.com.)

Challenged Book:

Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein

~Challenged at the Big Bend Elementary School in Wisconsin because some of the poems, “glorified Satan, suicide and cannibalism, and also encouraged children to be disobedient.” (1986)

  1. These books are nothing compared to the garbage in some books that little kids can read from the library in 2024.
Books that teach kids to be homosexual and worse do not have a place in the public library.
