It’s Banned Books Week, the week when we celebrate our freedom to read by remembering those books which have been banned, censored and challenged over the years. We’re highlighting a banned book a day here on the blog. If you’d like to participate in BBW, send us a video of yourself reading an excerpt from a banned book and we’ll post it on this Youtube channel, where a worldwide Virtual Read Out is in full swing. (Send your videos to alison@bookpeople.com.)
Challenged Book:
The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien
~Challenged, but retained, at the Pennridge, PA high school (2000) despite a protest of the book’s strong language. O’Brien was a finalist for the 1990 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.
