Scott’s getting ready for the crazy busy month of MysteryPeople events in October (and still trying to decompress from this year’s Bouchercon), but he did take a moment to shoot us the three books he’s looking forward to recommending when they go on sale next month:
The Burning Soul by John Conolly
PI Charlie Parker, is hired by an untrustworthy client with a dark past who is being harassed with some mysterious letters. Parker’s quest for the pen pal leads to the police, FBI, mob, and two fourteen year-old girls, one killed years ago, the other missing now. John Connolly is one of the most respected authors today and will be here November 6th to sign Burning Soul and his latest young adult novel, The Infernals.
A Single Shot by Matthew F. Jones
All of our staff who have read this reprint from Mullholland Books have loved it. A poacher follows his stray bullet to a camp full of drugs and money along with a woman killed by his shot. Dark and relentless with literary overtones, this book is great for fans of Daniel Woodrell, Tom Franklin, or Frank Bill.
The Consummata by Mickey Spillane & Max Allan Collins
Collins worked from an unfinished manuscript of friend and hard boiled master Mickey Spillane. It’s a swinging Sixties adventure with brave Cuban exiles, gold hearted hookers, and commies, evil, evil commies, featuring devil-may-care heist-man Morgan The Raider, who is trying to retrieve stolen money from a bad man connected to a mysterious dominatrix. I’m not making this up, but Max and Mickey did. Don’t expect believability or political correctness, but fun, no problem.
