What We’re Reading This Week

'Dance with Dragons' is next on the list for Robyn, our intrepid Assistant Buyer.

Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino

“This is not so much a novel as a series of beautifully descriptive passages. The literary conceit here is – Don Juan sits in the palace of Kublai Kahn, telling him of his travels around the ruler’s realm. These fantastic descriptions of imaginary cities take the reader on a magical journey through space and time. This is the Voyage Out Book Club’s selection for Sunday, August 28th, 5pm, so come join us in our ongoing adventures through the world of books!”

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

“I just started this. I picked it up because it’s really popular around here, a lot of people have been reading it. Even in the first couple of pages I can tell I’m going to like his writing style. It’s very fluid and pleasant to read. It’s not pretentious. It feels natural. I’m very excited to read it. The subject matter, video games and the 1980s, is pretty much right up my alley.”

(Meet Ernie Cline here Tuesday, August 23rd, 7p when we throw him a big 80’s Night Release Party!)

Zeitoun by Dave Eggers

“It was hard for me to come to work this morning because I kept wanting to read one more page.  I got to meet Dave Eggers when he was here last year and have had Zeitoun on my to-read pile for a long time.  I’m glad that I’m finally getting into it. It’s a beautifully written true story of the aftermath of Katrina and I can’t believe that it actually happened.”

A Feast For Crows: A Song of Ice and Fire  by George R. R. Martin

“This is the fourth book in Song of Ice and Fire and it’s amazing. With a series this long you’d think the action would die down, but it’s still intense, unpredictable and suspenseful. Only George R. R. Martin could make a 1,000 page novel feel like 200 pages.”

Aloha From Hell: A Sandman Slim Novel by Richard Kadrey

“Trashy and entertaining, with a supernatural twist. And it’s funny.”

(This book goes on sale October 2011.)
