Nick – The Thousand Summers of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell
“I’m only a little over a hundred pages in, but I’m already enjoying it. From what I understand, it only gets better the further you go. Right now, the stories of Japan at that time and of the Dutch East India Trading Company are extremely well done. Feudal Japanese history is a side passion of mine and I’ve been very pleased with the way he’s presented it. And then of course it’s David Mitchell, so it’s just incredibly smart anyway. That’s just the way he writes.

Danny – A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin
“I didn’t intend to read this right after the first book. I told myself I’d take a month break. But then I read the preface and it hooked me. It’s as good, if not better, than the first book. The whole series is like reading historical fiction rather than fantasy. It’s awesome. I love it.”

Kester – Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
“I’m glad to finally get around to reading this classic. I’m reading it for the August 14 meeting of Required Reading Revisited Book Club. It’s already got the sort of underlying eerie madness to it that I can tell I’m really going to enjoy.”

Scott – Bayou Trilogy by Daniel Woodrell & Plugged by Eoin Colfer
“I’m actually reading two books right now. I’m on the second novel in Bayou Trilogy by Daniel Woodrell. This is a tough and beautifully written book. It reminds me of why he’s a master. Looking forward to discussing it at the Hard Word Book Club on July 27th, when Woodrell himself will be calling in to chat with us.
The other book I’m reading doesn’t actually come out until August. It’s Plugged by Eoin Colfer, who’s mainly known for his Artemis Fowl series. This is dark, fun, pulply comic noir. I’ve been dying to read this book ever since I read a dark, twisted short story of his in an older collection called Dublin Noir. It’s worth the six year wait for me!”

Madeline – The Summer I Learned to Fly by Dana Reinhardt
“This book is really good, really well done. It’s about a girl named Birdie whose father died when she was three years old. One summer she discovers a notebook of his and learns that his biggest fear was that he’d never see his little daughter spread her wings and fly. This is the first summer when Birdie takes chances and metaphorically flies.”
