In honor of the 127th anniversary of Bloomsday, the day Leopold Bloom spent stumbling down the streets of Dublin in James Joyce’s Ulysses, BookPersons Stephanya and Clint have made a solemn vow to one another: they will read a chapter of Ulysses every week and discuss it. No excuses. No complaining, “Oh, my eyes are tired and my head’s about to explode.” One week, one chapter. Good luck, brave readers. We’ll check in along way.
Folks are celebrating June 16th all over the globe in all kinds of ways. The James Joyce Centre in Dublin has a whole slew of activities planned for the Joycean fan, including a James Joyce Bicycle Tour. If you’re in Wilmington, North Carolina, stop by Old Books on Front Street where they’re staging a marathon reading of Ulysses from 9am to 9pm. If you’re swinging through Oslo, Norway today (you know, like you do,) stop by the Ibsen Museum for lectures and “hidden surprises” (and be sure to do it in costume.)
And if you’re wandering the streets of Austin today with a battered copy of Ulysses in hand, bring it on over to Austin Java where the Balcones Center for Creative Writing at AAC is hosting an evening of readings, poetry, and music.
Here’s a rap tribute to James Joyce, courtest of Frank Delaney (which, to be honest, is less rap and more tribute, but it’s still fun.)
Happy Bloomsday!
