What We’re Reading This Week

Clint – Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention by Manning Marable

“This is a brilliantly researched study of one of the most iconic figures in twentieth century African American history.

Jenn – Enough About Love by Herve le Tellier

“This starts off as a pretty typical love story about two couples, but I just reached the part where you learn that one of the couples is not actually real, they’re imaginary. I’m trying to figure out which one it is. It’s suddenly a very weird book.”

Jamie – Tragedy of Arthur by Arthur Phillips

“It’s a fun concept. Arthur’s dad is a forger, ne’er-do-well type who’s found a lost Shakespeare play and Arthur has been asked to write the introduction to it. What follows is 250 pages of Arthur explaining why you shouldn’t believe his father and it isn’t actually a lost Shakespeare play. The introduction is followed by the actual play. I’m not too far into it, but so far I like it a lot. If you like Shakespeare, you’ll like it. If you don’t like Shakespeare, you’ll still like it.”

Nick – A Fire in the Sun by George Alec Effinger

“I’m really enjoying it. It’s classic cyber punk, to the point where he’s right there alongside William Gibson, who was actually a compatriot of his until he died. It’s got a great noir feel to it. Fairly gritty. It’s good, exactly what I need, light summertime reading.”

Topher – The Adventures of Benny by Steve Shreve

“This is a first chapter book so it’s right up my alley. It has lovely and very silly black and white illustrations and basically follows Benny on his adventures where he meets Bigfoot, meets a mummy, meets a pirate. All those fun cool monsters. It’s very silly and very boyish. And I really liked it. So there.”
