Books I’m Excited About: ‘Great Circle’

Readers love big historical novels for a reason. The best of them bring the past to life and have a lot to say about the present despite the period they’re set in. Here’s one Uriel thinks you should have on your radar!

What’s better than books? Big books. I love getting lost in a hefty tome (here’s the proof) and if you’re a reader who couldn’t get enough of The Nix or The Heart’s Invisible Furies, then Maggie Shipstead’s forthcoming Great Circle is going to check all of the right boxes for you. There’s intersecting storylines, romance (not all amorous) for people and the skies, all of the great world building you’ve come to expect from rich historical novels, and a couple of heroines you can’t help but root for. If you want a more impassioned take, here’s something I wrote up for Libro.fm:

Like so many big, statement-making novels, Maggie Shipstead’s Great Circle is an inviting, ambitious, and commodious work. But unlike so many of them, Great Circle makes the statement without dragging across its page count. It gallops, in fact, in its telling of Marian Graves’s triumphant and ill-fated aerial trek across the globe and of the Hollywood starlet, decades later, charged with playing her on screen. And it does so with verve and an infectious volley of voice that I couldn’t get out of my head.

It’s the kind of story you wish would never end. Great Circle is as heart-aching as it is profound in what it says about life’s great journeys, our shared histories, and freedom!”
