Austin Events For The Literati – July

Literati Events BannerEach month I’ll be investigating events around town that might pique the interest of the book nerds, the literature obsessed, and those who enjoy stimulating entertainment and/or socializing. Not surprisingly, Austin has a number of things going on every month the Book People community would enjoy.

Evolution is an evolution-themed art exhibit in conjunction with the 2016 joint annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE), the Society of Systematic Biologists (SSB), and the American Society of Naturalists (ASN) in Austin, TX. The exhibit closes Saturday, July 30th with Far Out Films #4, a free screening of short films inspired by the exhibit. This exhibition is generously sponsored by the Evolution 2016 meetings.

Alamo Drafthouse Screenings of Book Adaptations:

The Untouchables in 70mm

Alamo Drafthouse Ritz – July 9th and 10th

This 1987 American Gangster film, directed by Brian De Palma, stars Kevin Costner as Eliot Ness, and Robert De Niro as Al Capone. An excellent film to experience in 70mm. The film is based on the autobiographical memoir, The Untouchables, written by Eliot Ness and published in 1957. This screening is part of the Drafthouse Series – The Films of Brian De Palma.

Kids Camp: The Neverending Story

Alamo Drafthouse Slaughter Lane – Multiple showings through the month of July

Released in 1984 and directed by Wolfgang Petersen, The Neverending Story is one of the timeless fantasy films of our generation. Originally a novel in German by author Michael Ende (a masterpiece in its own right), the story centers on a boy, Bastian, who escapes his difficult young life in a story set in the magical land of Fantasia. The film deviates heavily from the book, so if you love one, we highly recommend experiencing the other!

All Kids Camp shows are “Choose-Your-Own Price” between $1 and $3. 100% of tickets sales go to benefit local non-profits.

Dune

Alamo Drafthouse Ritz Location – Monday, July 18th @ 10pm

David Lynch’s Dune, based (loosely) on the first book in Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi series, is maybe the most divisive film adaptation of a book in the entire genre world. There is no doubt Lynch took significant liberties with the source material, removing some of the most interesting aspects of the original story. And yet, there is something about it. The style and tone? The incredible performances? Its unparalleled vision and audacity? If you’ve never seen it on the big screen, now is your chance!

Austin Events for the Literati is researched, curated, and written by bookseller Sarah Holdgrafer. It’s purpose is to make it easier to discover events that would interest people in the literary scene, or just people that read the BookPeople blog, here in ATX. It is by no means comprehensive!

So, if you are hosting, or just know about, a literary themed or related event here in Austin in the upcoming months, email sarah.h (at) bookpeople dot com and let her know about it (hopefully with at least a few weeks advance warning)! The Austin Events for the Literati blog post goes up by the 1st of every month.

NOTE: These events are not produced by or affiliated with BookPeople. We just think they are great, that you’ll like them too, and hope to see you there! For official BookPeople events, please see the BookPeople Events Calendar!
