Bob Mould is coming to BookPeople on Sunday, and I am pretty damn excited.
I’ve met my fair share of rock stars, artists, authors and the like between working here at BookPeople and gigging and touring with my own band, but Bob Mould definitely stands out. He has risen to critical success and acclaim not once, not twice but three times. He may be best known for his time with hardcore-punk-cum-alt-rock founding fathers, Hüsker Dü, but he also fronted alternative rock band Sugar. They were NME’s band of the year in 1992 and had a great single, “If I Can’t Change Your Mind”, and easily held their own with bands like REM.
As with Hüsker Dü, Mould chose to break the band up during the height of their success. Perhaps he was just destined for a solo career. It’s been a good one for him. His music regularly appears in television and the movies, most recognizable is probably Mould’s song “Dog on Fire,” which is the theme song for The Daily Show. They Might Be Giants perform the current version.
His book, See a Little Light: The Trail of Rage and Melody, is a memoir written with luminary rock biographer and journalist Michael Azerrad. As you might have guessed, the book reveals that Mould is way less in to Hüsker Dü than you or I these days. It also reveals much about how his professional career has been shaped by his struggles with growing up gay in a dysfunctional family, a small, rural town, and a punk scene that in some quarters was less than tolerant. He charts his romantic relationships, body image issues and decisions to quit both drinking and cigarettes cold turkey as well has his surprising 7 month foray as a creative consultant with World Championship Wrestling.
